I write travel journalism for the same reason that I travel, and the same reason I write stories; to discover and delight in the common humanity that unites us all, across cultures, landscapes, and languages.
I think meeting new experiences and new people with a mind as empty of preconceptions as possible is vital, not just to good travel journalism, but to being a good human being.
I love to go alone to new places, and sit down in local tea houses or coffee shops, listening, observing, trying to understand, trying to relate. I've done this from Samarkand to Dumbo, and I love having the opportunity to share my stories so that others can recognise what we have in common with those who seem so far away.
Turkey
I spent several years living in Turkey, and have travelled extensively across the country, including to Mardin in the far South-east, and from Gelibolu (Gallipoli) in the west to Ani on the Armenian border. I speak Turkish and spend at least a month every year there.
Wales
I grew up in south Wales and have extensive knowledge of the south and west. Having stayed in many places all across the country I am well placed for roundups, features, human interest pieces, and culture and history articles.
I was recently commissioned by Weathertotravel.com to write a piece on the thermal baths of Budapest. You can read the article here.
